Cities, businesses and research institutes are developing solutions and operating models that enable the improvement of indoor air quality, as well as the supplying and acquisition of good indoor air as a service. Measurements and new methods increase our understanding of the components of good indoor air quality.

Millions of people’s everyday life can be improved by solving indoor air quality problems.
The business potential of the project has been estimated to be hundreds of millions in Finland and billions of Euros globally.
Good indoor air as a service concept is a novel approach to a globally common problem.
Collaboration between cities creates the basis for companies utilising indoor air information to develop their own service models and increases the ability to develop know-how into commercial solutions.
In the change project, the cities, companies and research institutes are developing the Good Indoor Air as a Service concept. Functional measuring instruments and methods, as well as defining the criteria, provide a better understanding of the factors of good indoor air and indoor air conditions. The development platform consists of 20–30 new or renovated buildings in Espoo, Helsinki and Vantaa. The goal of the project is to give birth to an ecosystem that creates new solutions, services, operating models and export concepts that produce better indoor air.
Understanding indoor air quality factors will make it easier and more cost-effective to acquire, produce and maintain good indoor air in the future. The user of a property can set quality standards for indoor air or the maintenance company can provide good indoor air in the same manner as energy efficiency is sold today. Furthermore, open research data generates new business.
In the early stages of the project, the indoor air quality of Helsinki, Vantaa and Espoo’s schools and kindergartens has been studied, but in the future the method will also be applied to other building types. The factors of good indoor air are monitored in real time at the example locations through measurements and user feedback.
The change project is led by VTT and the project partners are the cities of Helsinki, Espoo and Vantaa, and Aalto University.
Where are we going
The change project began in April 2018 and will last 12 months. The project is a Smart & Clean change project in accordance with the Helsinki Metropolitan Area’s growth agreement. It receives the state’s AIKO funding awarded by the Helsinki-Uusimaa Regional Council for launching regional innovations and trials. The cities of Helsinki, Vantaa and Espoo are also co-financing the project.
